William Murdoch, (1754 –1839), a Scotsman working in the mining industry in Cornwall in the late 1700s was an extremely talented engineer and innovator. His most famous invention was the application of gas lighting for domestic houses to replace tallow and oil lamps. With the first domestic residence in Britain to be lit by gas being Murdoch’s own house in Redruth in 1792. The town has an Annual Murdoch Day in June celebrating his significant contributions.

Loveday Tresidder
Born just after midnight March 31st 1700, Loveday grew up in Porthemmet on the north Cornish coast. One of seventeen children, her father and brothers all worked in the local mine. Whilst watching her mother’s endless toil preparing croust (packed lunches) for the men to take to work, Loveday came up with the ingenious idea of combining both a meal and a pudding in one edible package. Fish at one end, dessert at the other all contained in a specially reinforced pastry crust in case it was dropped. With the crimped edge forming a handle by which the miners could eat their meal without getting it dirty.
Who would have imagined that the humble pasty would go on to become such an emblem of Cornwall.

The Cornwall Marine Academy is an initiative of Cornwall Marine Network – and we designed a promotional flyer aimed at 16 to 18 year olds that will be distributed throughout Cornwall.
Cornwall Marine Network Guide & Directory 2010 has just been delivered to the client. We have produced their annual 108 page guide for the past three years and are always pleased to work with this marine organisation.
